1) Favorite historical figure: Abraham Lincoln. I know, safe and boring choice. But, hey, dude came from nothing and rose to the pinnacle of power AND drove the course of American history in a new and exciting direction, so...yeah, I'm comfortable with my choice.

2) You can judge the past with today's lens as a point of comparison or as a measure of progress/lack of progress. True understanding only comes by exploring how people of the past perceived their world.
