In fairness to Carlson, it's relatively rare to see coin-operated carts in the US. The only retailer I know uses them is the Aldi chain.

What is becoming increasingly common among US retailers is a system that automatically locks the wheels of the cart if you go beyond a certain point in the parking lot.
